Saff Mann AAC

Born in Leeds with grand ideas of being a musician, I ended up in London, teaching steel pan and classroom music. In 2005 I escaped the rat race and settled in deepest darkest Lincolnshire.
For the past 12 years I have worked in the field of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) in schools. My work has taken me into a wide range of educational settings, from mainstream schools through special schools, specialised colleges, sixth forms and home education throughout the UK.
My sole purpose has been to facilitate my students to access their education in a manner which suits their access needs, physical limitations and cognitive abilities.

I have worked in many school settings, both primary and secondary with many different students, all with different access methods. In recent years I have worked with two students to enable them to achieve formally recognised qualifications, BTEC and GCSE within a mainstream setting. This work involved prolonged involvement within the school, training TAs, ensuring they had vital assistive technology and ensuring that a ‘normalway of working’ was established to enable the student to get the reasonable adjustments and exam concessions needed to access these external qualifications.
Through my involvement in exams I became interested, with a number of individuals, in the lack of official guidance on exams. We formed the AAC Exams Access Board, which has recently published a set of guidelines to help SENCOs and SEND managers to approach exam boards to achieve exam concessions.
I have delivered a number of presentations nationwide about AAC and Literacy and Exam Access for AAC Users. I am a Communication Access UK accredited organisation.
